- Helps family caregivers manage stress
- Presents techniques to reduce outbursts
- Models constructive communication skills
- Encourages a plan for action
- Ideal for medical settings and work–life balance programs.
Accusations and emotional outbursts are distressing but common among people who have dementia. This multimedia CD-ROM features videos of family caregivers talking about what they have done to keep communications smooth and outbursts to a minimum. Early in the program, viewers indicate the stage of dementia of the person they care for and then receive advice tailored to that level. A module about handling one’s own emotions (e.g., guilt, anger, and sadness) includes prompts to make a plan by choosing strategies for the next two weeks. A dramatization models constructive ways to negotiate assistance from other family members, and the Information Center offers facts about types of dementia, community and national resources, and how to get help.
Built Around Solid Research
Developed by the Oregon Center for Applied Science, Inc., this program demonstrated significant effects during a clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health.
