Communication Skills for Professional Caregivers
Funded by the National Institute on Aging
This is the first module in the Professional Caregiver series. In this module, caregivers are introduced to strategies that help them gain effective communication skills for working with residents suffering from dementia.
Skills demonstrated include:
- Redirection
- Recognizing verbal and nonverbal cues
- Proper speaking skills
- Use of communication cards
There are 4 VHS tapes in this module. Each is a stand-alone lesson. The first tape in Communication Skills is Dementia Overview, which describes the mechanics of cognitive impairment as well as the various conditions that cause memory loss. Speaking and Reacting Skills covers verbal and nonverbal cues that promote cooperation and help to calm confused and agitated residents. Redirecting Skills teaches caregivers to distract an upset resident from distressing thoughts or activities, and Communication Cards provides instruction for helping residents who ask repeated questions.
The Facilitator’s Guide walks the trainer through each tape, with cues for when to pause and resume, and offers discussion prompts to maximize trainee ability to absorb and apply the skills presented. Quiz questions are included to ensure caregiver comprehension.
Like all of our professional caregiver training modules, Communication Skills is ideal for inservice training. It comes with a ready-to-use Facilitator’s Guide that includes quizzes, handouts, and lesson plans.
