People generally think of date rape as a problem on college campuses, but a growing body of evidence suggests that many high school students experience sexually aggressive or coercive behavior. A radio talk show sets the stage for Risky Situations. As teens call in and describe their experiences, it becomes clear that there is a pattern to the situations that often end up in coercive sex or date rape. During the course of the show, males and females learn about the dangerous consequences of coercion and what they can do to prevent it.
A randomized controlled trial of 142 high school students showed that viewers of Risky Situations developed a significantly greater understanding of the issues, including the types of situations that are more likely to lead to date rape and the fact that most rapes are not committed by strangers.
The Teacher’s Guide for Risky Situations includes discussion questions and answers, a lesson plan, ready-to-copy handouts, and additional suggested activities. Although it is set up for a group presentation, this program can also be viewed by individuals at home, in medical clinics, at school, or in the library.
Risky Situations is part of a three-video package about teen relationships.
