Being abstinent does not mean becoming an asexual person. Perspectives on Abstinence seeks to break down teen resistance to the concept of refraining from intercourse. The basis of the story in this video is a classroom project for which the students are preparing a presentation about their community’s views on sexual behavior. As they interview friends, family members, doctors, coaches, and clergy, they come to realize that there are many different views about what constitutes sexual relations.
This video presents sex as a continuum of activities and encourages viewers to identify their own limits on that continuum. The Teacher’s Guide for Perspectives on Abstinence includes discussion questions and answers, a lesson plan, ready-to-copy handouts, and additional suggested activities. Although it is set up for a group presentation, this program can also be viewed by individuals at home, in medical clinics, at school, or in the library.
In a randomized control trial with 366 high school students, those who saw Perspectives on Abstinence felt significantly more confident in their ability to remain abstinent until marriage.
Perspectives on Abstinence is part of a four-video package about avoiding teen pregnancy.
