Taking Care of Business: Contraception Basics for Teens
Funded by the National Institute on Child Health and Human Development
- Gives teens the information they need to make wise decisions
- Models teens engaging in mature, responsible behavior
- Increases the likelihood that sexually active teens will use contraception
- Includes a Teacher’s Guide with lesson plan, handouts, and activities.
In Taking Care of Business, a young couple is considering sex and has decided to go to a clinic to find out more about their options. During the course of the story, they learn about several methods of protection: how they work, how they are used, and whether they provide protection against STDs or just contraception. Viewers not only learn the basics of preventing pregnancy, but also learn that their consistent and responsible use of any method is key to its effectiveness.
In a randomized control trial of this program, viewers tested higher in knowledge of contraceptive methods than did those who did not see the program. They also reported a much greater likelihood that they would use contraception if they chose to be sexually active.
The Teacher’s Guide for Taking Care of Business includes discussion questions and answers, a lesson plan, ready-to-copy handouts, and additional suggested activities. Although it is set up for a group presentation, this program can also be viewed by individuals at home, in medical clinics, at school, or in the library.
Taking Care of Business is part of a four-video package about avoiding teen pregnancy.
