Professional Dementia Care: When Bad Things Happen
Funded by the National Institute on Aging
This is the third module in the Professional Caregiver series. In this module, caregivers learn that caring for confused residents is many times thankless. People with dementia often lose their manners, or worse. Difficult resident behavior can increase staff turnover—especially if employees are not trained to deal with it.
Skills demonstrated include:
- Redirection
- Use of humor and patience to cope
- Strategies to prepare for unpleasant encounters
- Dealing with grief and sadness
There are 4 chapters in this module. Each is a stand-alone lesson. The first three chapters in When Bad Things Happen address common situations that could easily anger or offend an employee: Racist Comments, Sexual Talk, and Insults. Experienced caregivers talk about ways they have been able to successfully use humor, ignore comments, or redirect the resident. Trainees are taught to plan ahead of time and have strategies ready should these challenging situations arise. By choosing the method that best fits their personalities, caregivers can confidently maintain their professionalism during a potentially heated exchange.
The fourth chapter of When Bad Things Happen addresses the problem of coping with grief when a special resident passes away. In When a Resident Dies, your staff members identify their own grieving style and learn healthy techniques to process their sadness. During the clinical trial of the Professional Caregiver series, this lesson was far and away the most popular with the CNAs. The Facilitator’s Guide walks the trainer through each chapter, with cues for when to pause and resume, and offers discussion prompts to maximize trainee ability to absorb and apply the skills presented. Quiz questions are included to ensure caregiver comprehension.
Like all of our professional caregiver training modules, When Bad Things Happen is ideal for inservice training. It comes with a ready-to-use Facilitator’s Guide that includes quizzes, handouts, and lesson plans.
